They are perhaps the supreme symbol of victory. Trophies measure accomplishment. Most of the time, the bigger the trophy, the higher the achievement. From the biggest of competitions to the humblest of matches, from major sports events to a local elementary school\’s Spelling Bee contest, trophies are everywhere.
The word trophy was derived from the Greek term \”tropaion\” which came from the verb \”trope,\” which means \”to rout.\” Trophies were thought as marks of triumph in war battles back in ancient Greece. People used to make them on the fields of victorious battles, with the bases inscribed with the details of the fight and an inscription to the god they believed assisted them in winning the battle.
As for the Romans during ancient times, trophies were kept close to homes. They were extremely big and were often placed on pillars and arches rather than being a tribute to the victors and the gods on the battlefield.
Not a great deal is known about its history during the Middle Ages. Nevertheless, it is believed that they were used as prizes for sporting events in the late 1600s. The regular shapes used then were silver chalices and two-handled sterling loving cups.
Trophies now come in assorted kinds and sizes. Cups and chalices are still prevalent in this day and age, but more and more shapes are now being produced, including stars, human forms, animal shapes, and abstract.
For mass production, materials used nowadays include steel, pewter, crystal, and plastic. They are a great deal less expensive and can be mass produced.
Aside from sports, trophies are also awarded in recognition of an individual or group accomplishment. Example is from the Hollywood major awards event The Academy Awards, where individual abilities (acting, directing, producing, etc.) and group efforts (film, cast, etc.) are recognized with a stylized human award.
A trophy is not just a prize for a particular achievement, be it in sports, acting, discovery, and other skills. It symbolizes victory and status. Getting a trophy doesn\’t just mean being able to defeat your opponents in a game or being the leader in your area of expertise. It also means being part of the legacy that comes with the trophy.
