Roaches are known to be highly resilient creatures. Because of this resilience, roaches are found in most parts of the planet. There are varieties of cockroaches that thrive best in places where there are human dwellings. Once cockroaches invade human dwellings, these insects are categorized as pests. Cockroaches are capable of transmitting lethal germs when they crawl over human food.

Many people opt for strong insecticides and sprays that turn out to be quite dangerous for the human beings residing in the house as well. Therefore, it is normally a good idea to take recourse to natural ways of removing cockroaches from the residence.

You can start with bringing about simple changes in the kitchen like keeping the kitchen sink and the area underneath it clean and ensuring that unwashed utensils are not left in the sink for long. As cockroaches thrive in dark and damp places, the spaces in and around a sink provide them the perfect habitat. You must also keep all your food items and other organic stuff tightly wrapped to sever the food supply of cockroaches.

It is also important to block all the openings and holes, particularly the ones around your drainage and water pipes that provide the best points of entry to the cockroaches. You must also make sure that you deprive the cockroaches of a fertile breeding ground by keeping your sewers and the areas surrounding it dry and clean. If your home is near a waste dumping site or an exposed drainage, you have to take steps to find a solution for cleaning the area permanently, as these could be the chief causes behind repeated cockroach infestation in your home.

Lastly, if you are not left with an alternative but to use chemicals, you must opt for milder, yet effective chemicals like boric acid that is less hazardous than other stronger chemical sprays out there.

The number of pests can be controlled before they attain a worrisome mass by making sure that your house has a appropriate waste removal system and the overall hygiene level is high.

You should never be negligent when it comes to pest control as it is crucial for the health and protection of people whom you love the most. If you’re preparing for the GMAT exam, you might know by now that most people study for the GMAT in 12-16 weeks. Some study for up to a year or even more.

Why such a long period of time?

Exorbitant $1500 prep programs revolve around 12-16 week courses that eat up your Saturday afternoons. 12-16 weeks!

Even an intense-college course on sub-atomic physics takes only 9 weeks (in a quarter system like at Stanford) or a little longer for semester system colleges.

I’ve never taken a sub-atomic physics course before, but trust me-there’s a TON more difficult material in a 9 week sub-atomic physics class than there could possibly be on the GMAT.

Most of the concepts on the GMAT were discussed in high school. You’ve seen all this stuff before! So all you really need to do is to review high school math and writing and maybe learn a few new concepts. You’d also need to familiarize yourself with the various ways the GMAT guys try to trick you on the exam.

So now that we know most MBA applicants prepare 12-16 weeks for this exam that covers high school level material, why then is the average GMAT score in the low 500s? Seems like a perfectly legitimate question!

At first, I thought the only two reasons were 1) the material is very difficult 2) the test is very tricky

But it wasn’t until my two friends came out of the exam that I realized there’s actually a THIRD reason. You see, my two friends came out of the exam disappointed with their scores.

I asked them: How did you study?

They gave me a stack of the prep books they to study. I took a look, and within minutes, I was totally lost in the reading material.

The prep book was chock full of grammatical terms like participial phrase, dependent clause, and subjunctive. It would take me forever to understand what those terms mean.

No wonder why MBA applicants takes 12-16 weeks to prep for the GMAT! They spend their time learning these useless fancy grammar terms. The critical reasoning section was also filled with these weird terms I did not understand.

Within a few minutes, I found myself falling asleep to these prep books! Not a good thing!

The quant section did an equally stellar job of putting me to sleep. As a visual learner, there’s only so much I can absorb by reading a book.

It was a lightbulb moment: my relatively smart friends did poorly on the exam because the inefficient prep resources they used forced them to learn unnecessary grammar terms and confused them further. The prep books taught concepts–which are important–but they were missing something important: an efficient thought process. My friends essentially learned all the concepts, but they did not know how to think through the exam question in a time-pressured environment.

During my two weeks of intense, marathon-like studying, I didn’t spend my time on “concepts” and instead developed an efficient thought process with frameworks that help me identify what is being tested.

But I can see how I could easily have ended up studying away 12-16 weeks of my life had I prepared the way my friends did for the GMAT. I eventually showed my friends my thought process and they retook the exam with success. You can read more about our story.

So back to the original question: Why do most students study GMAT for 3-6 months?

1) the material is very rigorous 2) the exam is very tricky 3) confusing, inefficient studying techniques

The material is difficult, but it’s not impossible. Yes, the test is very tricky so understanding the ways the GMAT guys try to trick you is important.

And yes, learn from the mistakes of my two friends. Make sure you stay away from confusing prep books that can waste away your precious time. Be smart about how you study because remember–how you study is perhaps the most important aspect to getting a good score.

The advantages of outsourcing can be significant for small business owners and for the business. Reviewing the history of outsourcing as a business strategy demonstrates that the need for specialized and low cost labor was a key driver. Small businesses are often constrained by the need to keep costs down and to find competent labor. Many small business owners cannot afford, and do not need, a large number of employees. Yet, small businesses need to grow to survive.

How to manage your small business for business growth without increasing your employees? How to keep focused on your defined business scope and manage the day-to-day business activities? Outsource needs that you can’t meet from within the business.

Outsourcing is about hiring outside resources or specialists to do what you can’t, or don’t want to, do yourself. You might not have the skills, experience or education to do everything that needs to get done. Or you might need more help than your existing staff can provide. For example, you might want to do a telemarketing blitz for the introduction of your new product. You don’t have the internal resources to do it efficiently, so you hire a call center in Las Vegas to do the calling. Or you might be able to do the business accounting yourself but you don’t have time in your day, so you outsource the bookkeeping.

Some of the advantages of outsourcing include containing payroll costs, minimizing your recruiting efforts, having fewer internal employees to managing, and improved utilization of dollars (you can hire specialists in the field on short term contracts). Often the most significant advantage is in the cost/benefit relationship. Contracting for a specific service or project is often the most cost effective solution.

There are many functional services that can be outsourced. Here is a short list of some of the most common ones: human resources support – including recruiting, training, salary surveys, writing of job descriptions, writing of employee policies, payroll and benefits; accounting support – such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, bookkeeping, financial statements; marketing – such as specific direct marketing programs, new product launches, promotional brochures, and email campaigns; information technology support – such as vacation relief, backing up remotely, hardware maintenance, and software analysis; transportation – such as warehousing, inventory, shipping; building and grounds cleaning and maintenance; sales – such as independent sales agents or distributors; management consultants; and more.

Transition from outsourcing services to hiring a full time person when the cost of outsourcing is significantly more than the cost of hiring staff; but make sure that you recognize that outsourced services are often specialized whereas an employee may be more of a generalist. For example, if your accounting outsourcing is costing you 20 percent more than an employee would, hire an employee who can do the accounting (receivables, payables, costing, and financials) and help in the administration of the office.

There are many good reasons to outsource but the best reason is that it allows you to focus on what you do best, and to focus on what’s harder to outsource (your passion for the business). Consider your strengths and weaknesses and focus your efforts on the higher impact and higher profit endeavor. Your decision to outsource needs to be balanced with what you gain or lose by outsourcing.

As a small business owner or manager, you are focused on getting, and improving, your success. The advantages of outsourcing are significant: save money and time and improve results. And use more proven strategies and resources from the More For Small Business site to better lead your business.

Teamwork is very essential in the workplace. Through this, all of the employees will become united and work as one – thus becoming very productive. Another advantage of having teamwork in the workplace is the warm and friendly ambience this projects. Because of this, everyone will feel comfortable with each other and will be able to function with each other well. With these effects brought about by teamwork, it is a no brainer that having this is really very important.

There are companies which are fortunate enough to have teamwork instilled in their working attitude right away. But, there are also a lot of companies who need help in uniting their workers together in the workplace. Those companies who have difficulty with getting everyone to connect with each other hold teamwork workshops to enhance everyone’s relationship with each other.

The purpose of these workshops is to bind everyone together. Communication is given much emphasis and the team members are taught how to relate effectively with each other. Each others’ talents are recognized and the team practices teamwork by thinking how to maximize these talents to their full potential. The teamwork seminars are similar with team building because they strengthen the group and teach them how to handle trials which they will probably face in the future.

Another thing that teams could benefit from teamwork trainings is the added knowledge regarding building a high performance and being able to maintain it. They will be given tips on how to do just this. This training will not only focus on improving team spirit but it will also give specific attention to the individual members of the team. It will try to encourage the workers to improve their individual team building skills so that it could work for the benefit of everybody. This training should not consist purely of boring lectures. Although, there may be some lectures, there should be plenty of activities which will challenge the participants to take part in the workshops actively.

To determine that teamwork training is effective, the participants should be able to gain new insight on working as one and becoming more productive after the activities. They should understand how each individual member of the team is important in achieving success for the team. They should also recognize just how vital good communication is and know the different approaches of doing so. Team members should be able to know various methods of how to solve conflicts among other members. Creativity and resourcefulness should also be given importance in the team.

The truth is, the only thing we can be sure of – as well as death and taxes, of course – is that there will always be change. And how we use change to better our lives is up to us. One of the key roles of any manager is managing change in the many areas that are constantly evolving, through understanding the principles of change management involved.

The challenge with change is to have smooth transitions from the current state to the one which is the goal, so a manager has to make the change as easily as possible, thus maintaining harmony and productivity whilst the unsteady state is in motion.

The manager’s role in managing change effectively is to explain in words, actions and deeds, why this change is essential for short and long-term benefits and to start their thinking about how best to bring it about, remembering that it’s the personal insecurities of employees that hold them back. It gets so personal because they do not know if any of the changes will affect their own situation, so change can often be seen as a real threat, to which the react defensively.

Change is so often unpredictable – as are the responses to it.

A vital component in any change management activity, is how well a manager gets the critical messages across. For the changes to be properly understood and accepted, the channels of communication have to be smooth and well managed. For where the new processes, policies and work ethics required of the employees have not been well understood, is so often the starting point for disruption, dissatisfaction and even fall-off in productivity at such an important time.

Sometimes, major changes require serious reviews of manpower, perhaps even meaning there will be layoffs. Any effect this will have on the organization, or even just a sector, should not be treated with indifference. The feeling of not being valued by the company can significantly affect morale to the detriment of productivity of those who stay while their notice period runs through and even more so, for those who are left afterwards.

During instances such as this, a manager who shows empathy and takes full part in the process will be most valuable. Immediate and long term benefits can be better expressed and achieved when the manager is able to invite initiative and solicit suggestions from his team. Pacifying personal fears and strengthening commitment to the company with effective communication and participation are huge assets when employees are under such duress.

Managing change can be effectively delivered, by resolving conflicts, listening hard and empathizing so that individual concerns are addressed. By fully involving other expertise around the place – such as the HR team, for example – employees will feel more reassured that they are being treated with the importance and respect they deserve, which helps them realize that the changes being sought are for the betterment of the entire organization in which they have a personal – and very real – investment too.

Likewise, when employees are assured that their management wants them to be part of the entire process they get a sense of direction, which allows both parties to give and get the support needed to make any transition through changing circumstances even more successful.

(c) 2009 Martin Haworth. One vital job of a manager is managing change to make things much more effective in the business. Regularly a manager is faced with the challenge of making his people change their habits and behaviors for the greater good and using the best change management skills to bring about change, ensures success.

React and manage your company’s non performing employees

As an HR professional, understanding mediocre or poor performers goes a long way in correcting a negative behavior at work place. Tackling employees needs and demands requires time and tactics.

People tend to break down when they are loaded with work responsibility at home and in office. Some people manage these situations exceptionally well while some loose hope for any improvement. This results in throwing tantrums on their employer and making them the sole reason for their current sorrows.

The organization looks upon these medium performers as a liability to them and hence do not recognize them nor fire them. These kind of employees are involved in daily management activities and hence do not display or showcase exceptional results which ultimately leads to no career development for them.

Negative Impact on performance

Experts believe that such kind of employees usually ruin the learning, morale and performance of other employees. As it will be difficult for co-workers to escape from such negative impact, it is for the employers to deal with the problem. Experience and common sense says that if such employees are ignored or left to change by themselves, the workplace can soon turn indifferent to the company culture and even start disrespecting it.

Check out the list of things that a low performer does:

Spreads negativity about the organization and its environment. Discusses and talks to co-workers during breaks on the negative side of the organization. Creates an environment of discomfort against company policies and procedures. Handling such kind of employees is a challenge for any present day organization as this behavior tends to disrupt the healthy environment of the company.

Building understanding for employee

Change in the employee behavior needs to be studied by the organizations so they can understand the change in the mindset of its employees. In any new job people start off with enthusiasm however as time passes by they tend to loose their energy and ultimately lands up in an unplanned situation which they cannot handle.

Understanding what has gone wrong in the whole episode is a difficult task for managers to handle. This is because employees are not open to accepting the problem or taking responsibility for mediocrity at work.

Employers face crisis for three reasons:

Dealing with an employee who creates disturbance in the organization is delayed as proper identification of such a person is not an easy task.

The following measures will help employers handle such problems efficiently:

Give opportunity to employees so that they can share their thoughts:

Have an open, serious discussion with the employee. A straight no-nonsense talk can alert the employee in a great deal. Once the employee knows that, as an employer, you are serious about the issue, he/she will share his concerns and speak out. Once, the employee realises that the manager will help him overcome indolence, it is important to brief him about the expectations regarding his progress at work.

You can reward the employee and provide him support to grow in the organization which will result in improvements in his attitude and work responsibilities.

Define Objectives:

Sit with the employee and help him understand what the organization expects out of him and how he can set easy achievable goals for himself in line with the organization’s objectives. Try to recognize any act of positivity which will inturn help in boosting his morale and eradicating negative behavior.

Go to the grass root level:

Need specific training and development programs will definitely put the employee into the next level where they will not only gain confidence and perform better but will also specialize in his current work profile.

Review and feedback is essential:

Once the communication and training bit is done, the manager must review the employee’s work to see for progress or digress. In case of poor performance and unchangeable attitudes, the employee must be warned firmly. It should be clear that disinterested work patterns and attitudes will not be tolerated and will be subjected to further disciplinary action.

Time to say good bye:

Despite of all efforts and help, the employee is reluctant to change his attitude, calls for a serious action from the management which can also lead to a final termination from services. Share your concerns and his drawbacks politely in order to avoid any arguements. Further it is seen that such employees are already prepared for such a decision and they seldom go against it.

What can be concluded?

The take away from such an incident is that the employer conveys to his people how much he values his culture and that he will not compromise on anything and retain its dignity. Further, the organization needs to strengthen its recruitment strategy to avoid hiring people with any negative mindset.

There are a lot of management techniques out there. A lot of authors have written on the topic of how to manage your time and get the most out of it. Most of the books written focused on business leaders and corporate executives.

Stephen Covey’s time management book, First Things First, is a well acclaimed book. His time management technique is focused on giving tips to individuals to do things effectively.

Let us take a look at Stephen Covey’s Time Management Matrix.

-FIRST QUADRANT (URGENT)

MANAGE / QUADRANT OF NECESSITY – Crisis – Medical emergencies – Pressing problems – Deadline-driven projects – Last minute preparation for scheduled activities

-SECOND QUADRANT (NOT URGENT)

FOCUS / QUADRANT OF QUALITY – Personal leadership – Preparation / Planning – Prevention – Values Clarification – Exercise – Relationship Building – True recreation / relaxation

-THIRD QUADRANT (NOT IMPORTANT)

AVOID / QUADRANT OF DECEPTION – Interruptions and some calls – Some mails and reports – Some meetings – Many “pressing matters” – Many popular activities

-FOURTH QUADRANT (NOT IMPORTANT)

AVOID / QUADRANT OF WASTE – Trivia, busywork – Junk mail – Emails – Time wasters – Escape activities – Viewing mindless tv shows

There are 24 hours in a day. Eight hours is for sleeping and the next 16 hours are for our usual schedule. In Stephen Covey’s time management book (First Things First), he noted that most of us spend our 16 hours in the third and fourth quadrant, the quadrant of deception and waste.

If you will really look at our daily activities, Stephen Covey is actually right. Most of us spend hours watching tv, reading unimportant emails, answering calls, and other things that actually does not help us accomplish anything.

Stephen Covey’s time management is a great tool that can help us finish more important things before a day ends. You just have to focus yourself and experiment with the quadrants and how it can help you. In getting things done you have to set your mind on what you will do. The activities in the first quadrant need to be managed in the best way that you can. Focus on the Quadrant of Quality and Personal Leadership because this can help you achieve your goals faster.

The last two quadrants should be avoided as much as possible. The third quadrant looks deceiving, it may look important but it is not. While the fourth quadrant will never help you get things done.

How we manage our time is all up to us. Whatever the consequences of our actions might be, we only have ourselves to blame.

If you wish to learn more about covey time management, be sure to check out our site today. It has tons of helpful tips and information on managing your time.
