Is There A Way Of Coping With Grief?

We grieve as innate reaction to loss. Grief is the anguish you experience when you lose something that or someone who is an important part of your life.

Some examples of situations that are reason for sorrow are as follows:

- you have split up with your girlfriend or boyfriend – you lost your career – you wasted the big chance to follow your dream – a family member tells you he or she is suffering from a serious illness – the hospital test results came in and you found out that you are suffering from a serious illness – your spouse wants a divorce – you had a fight with your best friend – your pet died – a person you love dies

All these examples can make us grieve. However, the most concentrated grief that we experience is when someone we love – such as a partner, a son or daughter, or a parent- passes away. Nothing can fill the void that suddenly opens up in our life when they die.

We may have shared a large part of our existence with our loved ones who have died. And life loses its former colors because of their demise. We feel the sorrow for what we have lost. Yet, in grieving, we have the hope of being able to heal our anguish and strengthen our lives to move onwards once more.

All of us have the right to air out our pain. When we grieve, we must select the healthy ways of expressing the pain that we experience.

Grieving does not mean wailing or crying your heart out each time you recall your loss. Crying is not the only sign that we are grieving the loss of a loved one. Someone may appear quiet, as if unfazed; yet deep within, they also feel the loss.

Grieving doesn’t have a set duration, such as the “recommended” time of just one year. The span of the grieving process will be different for one individual compared with another. If you are grieving, don’t rush yourself to instantly “get over it.” Allow time to heal your pain.
