Anyone in the modern era will be well aware of the possibilities presented by laser technology. For instance, we use them in a large number of devices including scanners in the supermarket and many security systems. We also use them during boardroom presentations as \”pointers\”, and we use them in the operating room as well. However, it is in industry that lasers are most commonly used, in the form of laser cutting machines. In numerous cases, however, lasers have the effect of burning rather than actually cutting, but the most common manufacturing purposes see accurate cuts being made in once difficult materials by the laser cutters.

There are several different sorts of laser cutting machine, with some running on gases and some using diodes. Some laser cutters are created specifically materials that don\’t melt (wood for example), but most are used to work with metals and plastics. They can fall under a range of classifications based on the power and wavelength of the beam produced. For instance, they can have names such as \”fluid\” lasers, and \”semi-conductor\” lasers, yet they all rely on the exact same mechanics.

How does the laser cutting process work? Since the most widespread use of lasers is in the cutting of metals such as steel and stainless steel, the majority of laser cutting machines will actually melt rather than cut the material that intersects with the beams path. This beam is produced inside the device where atoms are manipulated in an incredibly controlled way to generate a powerful stream of light that will be absorbed into the metal. When this happens there is a vast level of heat at the end of the beam and this begins melting the metal.

Interestingly enough, many laser cutters can make both clean and highly-finished or sealed cuts, but they could also make less refined cuts in order to allow some other machinery to complete the modifications. For example, if a laser cut metal component needs some form of threading worked into its design, the laser can actually be programmed mot to harden the edges of the cut.

When a company focuses on laser cutting operations they will typically look for ways to streamline their workflow. For example, many companies will \”nest\” parts on their laser cutting machines, allowing them to create several objects with a single use of the laser. Some companies even choose to computerize their whole manufacturing process. This has numerous names, like MRP, CAM or ERP, but these are all separate technologies that can be combined to make productivity efficient and nearly flawless. These programs may receive instructions to create parts for three or four different jobs using the same type of material. Instead of scheduling the cuts to be done one at a time, they can choose to cut all of the parts from just one sheet and in just one run. This makes the most of the materials and saves valuable time, thus increasing efficiency and limiting wear and tear on the machinery.

Plastic is one of the most used things in our lives, due to its flexibility, price and light weight. However, plastic is not eco friendly, and there are alternatives to it. One of the newest alternatives, and very popular, to plastic is liquid wood. This creates a good, nontoxic alternative to plastic, and has almost the same uses. Plastic is to be replaced for more than one reason. As it is made from crude oil, whose price has been growing recently, the price of plastic is growing too, so an alternative is needed.

When people go to convenient stores they take plastic bags by habit. They don\’t stop to think about them or anything, and this is normal. If we would stop and think about every action we do during the day, we\’d lose so much time. However, there are cotton bags, which are both eco friendly, reusable, and nice looking. You can buy them at a reasonable price, and take them with you whenever you go shopping.

When and if you want to get rid of plastic in your life, you\’ll also need to change some of your life style. People who eat organic food had to make huge changes, which start paying off immediately. For instance, if you buy organic food, avoid it if it\’s packed in plastic. For instance, don\’t buy organic mayonnaise in plastic bottles, it kind of defeats the purpose. Find a recipe for home made mayo, and start making your own, which you\’ll keep in glass bottles.

Until a while a go, you could advertize whatever you wanted, whether it was good for people or not. Well, okay, you couldn\’t advertize drugs per se, but tobacco industry had strong marketing experts, and tobacco isn\’t illegal anywhere in the world, although everyone knows how bad its effects are on both smokers and non smokers. Packaging is the only thing that is left to tobacco producers that can make it popular. Tobacco packs usually look fancy, and they are, believe it or not, part of smokers\’ clothing. This isn\’t true for a single country, but for the trade all around the world.

Plastic food containers are excellent for storing food. They come in all shapes and sizes, and they retain heat, and have a high tolerance for it. However, they are not healthy to use. When you use a glass bottle again and again, its condition does not change, but this is not true for plastic. It retains smells and little pieces of food, and even though the containers are cheap and practical, they should be avoided almost at all costs. There are padded cases which can easily hold glass bottles and jars for food, so you don\’t have to carry a plastic container to school or work.

There are many alternatives to plastic, and if you don\’t know why you should kick plastic out of your life, think about this information. The world uses from 500 billion to one trillion of plastic bags per year. Out of this, only a really insignificant amount is recycled. One plastic bag has a life span of 1000 years. Most of them end up out of dumps, literally killing animals and plants. Next time someone offers you a plastic bag, say no.

Daniel is a research scientist and engineer with a NGO in Sweden. His research is targeted at making Plastic Container environmentally friendly.
