The story is not a new one, many people have been influenced by the exciting rantings of someone we know and have decided to get involved with an MLM or Networking Marketing business. Money is paid out, time is spent learning about the product or service and then the foot soldiers trudge off to find unsuspecting customers.
Some time after, we might find that we have exhausted the contents of our address books and though some had joined, most had not and eventually the whole thing just dwindled to a distant memory. Meanwhile we get on with our real job and move on.
The main lesson I took from this myself, was that MLM does not work. After a period of time my friends came back and things were forgotten.
Is this story a familiar account for you? I am sure that I am not the only one to go through the experience in this way and it must be common because it seems that 96% of MLM newbies have an experience that is quite similar to my account.
Anyway, I became involved in non MLM businesses and after years of trying these – with some success (but nothing fantastic) I found myself being offered another MLM business opportunity. However I resolved that this time, if I was to join it – I was going to think outside of the box and do things differently as it were.
I sat down and analysed why so many people could fail when 4% of these people did ok and why only 1% made a serious fortune from MLM. So, I went to work finding out why this happened and the results I came up with were startling to say the least.
I asked myself the question about the type of approach with most MLM businesses when compared with a standard one.
I discovered that standard business people look at business in a different way to that of MLM newbies. The latter do largely what I did but the real 1% of MLM business people who became millionaires on the back of it look at matters differently. The top 1% invest in themselves, their business and use professionals such as accountants etc to do the things that they cannot. Of these key areas, the main one here is marketing or how and where they are going to find new customers.
I then looked at MLM newbies – who usually have an employees mindset – they have little knowledge of the above areas of business and so they invest in the wrong things. Some buy tons of product believing that their business is about selling as much of it as possible.
This brings me on to the next point that I would like to make – concentrating on the product. I found by studying how successful MLM business people worked, that this is the number one mistake made by MLM newbies. They get seduced into how good the vitamin supplement or brass cleaner is and they fail to realise where their key earnings potential is.
Now I was getting excited, I felt that I had stumbled upon something which was going to be a significant find in MLM.
Here we have the MLM newbie who has worked their socks off contacting everyone they know and some have joined – others have not. Their downline is packed with individuals who have done exactly the same and while this will generate some funds, it does not generate sufficient to even keep them qualified themselves.
So drastic action is required – you need to purchase leads. This you do (more money out) and you slog away at a databank until you have called all 100. Very hard work and soul destroying. These people are no different than the ones that have been recruited for the families and friends list. The result – you have worked your socks off for several months and your downline is full of people who are only using the product and you realise that you are not going to make your fortune in this way.
When I studied how the top 1% work, I realised that they do it much differently. They invest into their business by obtaining the right information. Most of that data costs money because it is valuable and it has usually been produced by the millionaires who were in this 1%.
I therefore invested in myself and spent less than I would have done on lists to obtain the information services. I therefore invested in elements which were necessary for my success – at least in my opinion. I downloaded books, articles and watched online videos and I realized that I had hit the golden seam – this was definitely it.
After studying this simple system, I could see that the way to approach MLM was to bring in other good MLM people who were facing the same problem that I had been. These businesspeople were who I wanted to join me in my MLM venture – but they already had their own MLM opportunity – so how was I going to manage this?
Thank goodness that I had accidentally stumbled upon a great information resource which was low cost and which contained the guidance that I was seeking. It became clear to me that leadership and direction was what I needed to offer to me team if I was going to copy the great MLM entrepreneurs. I begin to understand that the only way to get these existing MLM people to follow me was to lay down a clear path which would help them succeed themselves. I would stop being the Hunter and become the Hunted.
In a nutshell that is it – I was going to build a business where people sought me out and followed me not because of the MLM opportunity that I was working on at any one time, but because of who I was and how I would train them to do the same. As I had taken my lessons from one of the most successful MLM business people of all time, I was in good company and I was clear on how to follow in his footsteps.
I have now started to build a strong MLM team with my new MLM opportunity. The product or service itself is of secondary concern to me – but I now get contacts regularly and the frequency is slowly increasing. I am simply not too bothered if someone decides not to join me – if they are not 100% committed to becoming rich doing this, then I do not want them to join me anyway. So these people are vetted by me before I allow them into my team.
Show your downline leadership and direction and they will do the same to their downline and if you help them at every step of the way then everyone benefits. If you are bent on making an MLM business work without the assistance of others then you can forget it. You have to work with others to help them before you will tasted the sweet sensation of success yourself.
